Internet Explorer 7

I took the plunge today and installed “Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2”:http://www.microsoft.com/ie. I tried it on a brand new desktop computer here at work first so I could test what the uninstall process was like. Turns out it’s completely painless. IE7 uninstalls and restores IE6 as if nothing ever changed.

I was also more than a little worried that it would break my “IE Tab”:http://ietab.mozdev.org/ extension in Firefox, but I was pleasantly surprised after installing to find that IE Tab still functions and even uses the IE7 rendering engine. Slick!

Toulouse on Firefox

According to “Wired”:http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/12.09/view.html?pg=3, Stephen Toulouse, security program manager for Microsoft, uses Firefox.

Toulouse was interviewed about recent security flaws in IE. He mentioned Firefox in passing, and I think he only brought it up in a lame attempt to show that all browsers are subject to the same security issues as IE — all he said about Firefox is that he had to download a security update recently.

It sounds to me as though he only uses it for testing, but it’s at least comforting to know that Microsoft is sitting up and taking notice of their latest competitors.

I recently discovered through “The Inquirer”:http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=17382 that the IE development team has started a new “IE Blog”:http://blogs.msdn.com/ie.

Is this some kind of horrible joke? Do these guys actually believe that “IE is the best browser in the world”:http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2004/07/21/190747.aspx? I’m having trouble deciding which is more funny: the serious (but totally off-base) posts by the developers themselves, or the comments left by readers. The comments section is basically one big ad for Firefox!

Make Your Computer Smarter

I uninstalled Internet Explorer from my work computer this morning, and let me tell you, I feel a lot better. My computer somehow seems smarter.

The only reason I was keeping IE around was so I could listen to my favorite streaming radio station, “K-LOVE Christian Music”:http://www.klove.com. Fortunately for me, they addressed some problems with Windows Media Player in Firefox 0.9, so now I can actually connect to the station in Firefox.

Uninstalling IE is easier than you might think. In Windows XP, you simply go to the “Add or Remove Programs” option in the Control Panel and choose “Add/Remove Windows Components” from the buttons on the left. IE appears on the list with a little check box next to it. Simply remove the checkmark and continue through the setup wizard. In no time your computer will be free from inferior browsers.

New IE Security Exploit

Are you still using Internet Explorer? You should really consider switching. A security exploit was discovered recently that all IE users need to be made aware of. The trick uses a non-displaying character and a rarely used URL convention to trick you into thinking you are on one site when you are really at a different site.

I don’t know if it’s because I’ve been using Mozilla Firebird for the past month, or because I’ve been redesigning my site to be standards compliant, or if it’s some of the things I’ve read lately on SitePoint and A List Apart. It’s probably a combination of all three. At any rate, I don’t like Internet Explorer anymore — not one bit.
